Media Release – Attacks on government websites must be condemned

February 10th, 2010

Attacks on Federal Government websites in order to bring attention to the government’s plan to implement a mandatory Internet filter are harmful, according to Stop Internet Censorship co-founder Nicholas Perkins.

“Reports that attacks on Federal Government websites are being used to draw attention to the government’s plan to introduce a mandatory Internet filter are alarming, and any illegal action of this nature must be condemned,” Mr Perkins said.

“By attempting to bring down or deface government websites, a minority of Internet users have brought negative attention to what is a very important issue for Australians.

“It would be much more helpful for these people to put their efforts behind legitimate action to stop this ineffective and inefficient attempt at censorship by the Australian government.

“Educating families, friends and the local community about that the filter will not work, does not target child pornographers or paedophiles, and could result in parents believing that their children are safe when they are not, is more important.

“Parents need to be aware that any attempt to filter the Internet by Internet Service Providers will never work as well as filtering technologies that can be used within the home.

“Government bureaucrats and politicians should not have the right to tell parents what their children can or cannot access as it must be a decision made based on a parent’s individual values, not those of a bureaucrat.

“Money spent on a mandatory Internet filter would be better spent by funding additional police investigations into child pornography and child sexual abuse.

“The facts are that the list of filtered sites will not be made publicly available, and therefore is open to abuse by governments in the future that wish to censor debate on public policy in Australia,” Mr Perkins said.

ABOUT STOP INTERNET CENSORSHIP – Stop Internet Censorship is a group of people committed to educating the Australian people about the government’s attempts to introduce a mandatory Internet filter. This filter will be ineffective, inefficient and can be used by future governments to censor public debate within Australia. Stop Internet Censorship believe that educating Australians on the government’s plans by talking to friends, families and co-workers is an important part of the campaign against Internet censorship.

Publicly condemn their actions as much as you like but you can't deny that it brought the attention that it was looking for.

I am Australian and I am against child pornography, but I am also against Internet censorship. They are separate issues and child pornography should not be used in support of Internet censorship.

With freedom you get the good with the bad but the technology is not to blame. The Internet is not Disneyland.

    Also another note.
a MAJORITY of illegal pornography is shared via P2P....
  • Joseph. F
I also agree that this new policy will not work,
I'm also sick of the government telling us what we can and cannot do, last time i checked we are a democratic government, not a fucking communist government (pardon my french.) also on that note what other countries have a filter; Burma, Peoples Republic Of China, Cuba, Egypt, Iran, North Korea, Saudi Arabia, Syria, Tunisia, Turkmenistan, Uzbekistan, Vietnam...

    Well,
I'm sure as hell don't wont to be on that list.
Australia was promised high speed internet when we elected Kevin Rudd, he has spat that promise back in our face, the amount of speed loss in Australia is going to set us back. i believe it is going to be 30% - 45% Nation wide.

i believe the people who founded this whole "lets censorship Australia" scheme must never of used a computer in there life.

If they did realize, that if you pumped money into the police force and not into this censorship you would be doing good, people would want that policy in.

Stop acting like a Hero, and do whats right for the country, STOP PEDOPHILES AT THE SOURCE. (coming back to the police funding.)
besides i bet the government wouldn't even have an accurate table of the amount of illegal websites visited by Australians nation wide.

if i myself, a 15year old who i believe have been blessed with knowledge within IT can see that what the government is doing wrong, imagine what i could do when i was older eh?

i totally agree with the stopinternetcensorship. keep up the good work.

They obviously feel the government is not following its own laws, which makes what they did valid. And it is much less violent than previous ways the public had to use to force changes.

The alternative is what, everyone to goto the capital and stage a sit in to prevent operation of government offices?

The way they chose eliminates the risk of violence, and does not prevent the government from working.

We all need to stop calling it an attack, or using the word target!!! It was a protest! And it was peaceful!!!

"a minority of Internet users " hu?

Anonymous has several shades of itself... like everyone else.

These shades are perceived and exploited by its enemies and it's friends.

The one you masquerade in affects the whole.

    Tread carefully.

The hell with Nicholas Perkins. What has he actually achieved? The Ausfailia Government is just going to ignore you lot as well, so WE have to do things the fun way.

This isn't hacking and it doesn't represent attacks on the government. It is essentially the online equivalent of picketing. You should be supporting titstorm, not condemning it.

Why are you moralfags against us?

I think it's a good idea to pursue legitimate action to stopping this plan, but I also think that sometimes radical action is needed, to show just how passionately people feel about their plans. Besides, they've already shown that they don't care about public opinion, so they need a kick up the arse to show them that we aren't going to stand around idle while they strip us of civil liberties and freedoms.

Think for a moment that it could be the Government itself doing its own attacks to create another excuse to build backing for the filter. They know support against the filter is building fast so they need to create a way of saving it and that could be by stating that the filter or a modified version of it will stop the attacks. If you were in the governments position and you did not what to back down on policy, how would you go about convincing the public?

Go in that IRC channel and you'll see it's not the government.

Good job at helping the government to divert the anti censorship movement. Go argue with them when they managed to make arguing with the government a punishable offense.
